With all due respect, I would like to send greetings and salutations to those brothers and sisters who travel east and do the work of the GRAND ARCHITECT OF THE UNIVERSE.

I got the magazine on ebay. It was a late day in May, that Grand Master Frank Ruiz and I shot the cover for the April 1972 Edition of OFFICIAL KARATE MAGAZINE. The photographer was Joe Griffin. His studio was on west 40th Street. I remember that day. It was raining that day and we got to the studio late and drenched from the rain. After having some coffee and something to eat, we got down to the business of the shoot. I was a young Shodan and very excited about doing the cover with my grand master. During the shoot the photographer decided to go with this photo. We used one roll of film, that 32 shots on the roll. Grand Master Ruiz had no facial expressions. Mr. Joe Griffin wanted the grand master to make a face expression for the shot. Joe said "Make a face, Frank". 32 shots were taken and I remember telling Sensei Ruiz "For gods sake, please make a face sensei". After all, getting slammed in the neck 32 times was no fun!! It was, to say the least an exhausting shoot. Proud to do the cover with then Sensei Ruiz, I will cherish that moment in martial arts history. For many years, I was the grand master's uki for many of his demonstrations. When we did our knife sequence, he would always insist that we use a live blade. That made it real, when most demonstrators did not use live blades. I cut the grand master twice during some of these performances. I would later be cut by one of my own students. As they say, the apple doesn't fall from the tree. This was old school training still being used at the NISEI GOJU RYU HOMBU DOJO. It very hard to train a good uki these days. Never the less, I enjoyed every minute we worked together. Rest in peace Grand Master Ruiz, we still work it in the same spirit and dedication. OSU!!!

GM ROLDAN AT THE BUSHOKAI IN TEXAS

I would like send respect to those who travel east and do the work of the Grand Architect of the Universe. On October 29, 2010, I left to the Dallas- Fortworth area of Texas. I was greeted by Shihan Ivan Lewis and taken to the city of Kennedale, home of the Busho Kai Organization. There, I did 4 mini seminars on Nisei Arnis Jitsu. Each session lasted about one and a half hours. I also attented a dojo demonstration and promotion ceremony. The workshops were divided by age and rank. I work with the children of the dojo as well as the adults. A great time was had by all who attended the work shops.
It was nice to see Shihan Lewis and his family of martial artists. It has been over fifteen years since my last visit. The family and Bushokai's growth in Texas was evident on my trip. A great group of black belt, students, and a wonderful dojo. Shihan Lewis's entire family is involved in the dojo in one way or another.
The demonstration and promotion ceremony was a great event with visiting grand masters, parents, students and the like. The students demonstrated syncronized katas, kihon and bunkai(applications). Then the promotion and awarding of the belts. Congratulations to all who were promoted. It was beautiful to see the growth of Shihan Lewis's family and his Bushokai System. Keep it going on, Shihan Lewis!!!!

NISEI GOJU RYU ON WPAT 930 AM RADIO

Friday, November 5, 2010, Hanshi W. Roldan did a radio broadcast on WPAT 930 AM Radio!! He was interview by Sensei Teddy Smith on his radio show. The TEDDY SMITH SHOW ON WPAT 930 AM and wpat930am.com. It was broadcasted live and used a call in format. Teddy Smith is a radio personality who is a 5th degree black belt in Judo(gentle way) and karate black belt. On the program were film director Bryan Felber, GM Wilfredo Roldan, and Dr. Arlen Fleisher M.D. open heart surgeon and vein specialist. Bryan Felber and Roldan have been working on some film projects together and both answer questions about the martial arts filming process and Roldan answered the martial arts questions that were posed by the listening public. DR. Fleisher answered question about the heart and the vascular system(arteries and veins). One lady called inquiring about breaking a cinder slab with her head and another caller asked how he could kill a man. Well, lots of wierd questions were answered. More calls came in after we left the studio and we were asked to make another appearance on the program. I am looking forward to the next broadcast. Photos 1: Roldan and Teddy Smith. Grand Master Isaac Henry Passes

I would like to send my blessing to those who travel east and do the work of the Grand Architect of the Universe.

We of the Nisei Goju Family send our condolences to the family of Grand Master Isaac Henry Jr. I remember watching his group at karate tournaments back in the day. A championship crew, GM Henry troops were all respected by the martial arts community. He produced many champions of the arts. Grand Master Isaac Henry Jr. served his country in the military, was a police chief and founded the BKG martial arts system.

Grand Master Henry was one of the pioneer of the American Martial Arts Movement. Rest in Peace O'Sensei(great teacher) Henry, for you have taught many, the lessons of martial arts and life. You will be remembered by those lives you have touched. OSU!!!

4th NISEI GOJU TOURNAMENT HYDERABAD AP, INDIA

This past May 25, 2010, Sensei Konda of Hyderabad AP, India hosted the 4th Nisei Goju Championship in Hyderabad, India. The tournament was held at the D. P, S. School of the city. We are proud of the work Sensei Konda, in spreading Nisei Goju in his country.
The tournament was well attended with members of the martial arts community. In the top photo we have two little girls after receiving their award. Little girl on the right is Sri Laxmiamshita, who only training for 6 month took 1st place in her kata division. The photo below shows Mahesh receiving his Kata Grand Championship Trophy. HANSHI FRANK RUIZ 1934-1995 15TH ANNIVERSARY

I would like to sent my respect to those who travel east and do the work of the Grand Architect of the Universe.

On this Father's Day I send a special greeting to all fathers who do the right thing by their families.

On this day in 1995 the martial arts world lost Hanshi Frank Ruiz 1934-1995, Founder of the Nisei Goju Ryu System. Here, we celebrate the fifteenth anniversary of his passing. We remember his life and contributions to the martial arts. He raised many children in the Martial Arts and I was one of them. I am very proud of that fact. I ask the martial arts world to have a moment of silence today and remember O'Sensei Frank Ruiz. He was a father to many of us.

I remember taking the above photo for the cover of Official Karate Magazine. It took a whole roll of film(32 photos) to take this photograph of Grand Master Frank Ruiz choking me. I remember the photographer, Joe Griffins telling Hanshi Ruiz , "Frank, your not making a mean enough face". That's when I said "All due respects, would you make a mean face, already". Remember the name, the man, the martial artist and the legend Frank Ruiz. Rest In Peace, O' Sensei Ruiz, you are missed by those of us you touched.

CONGRATULATION!!!!!! Sensei Edwin J. Rodriguez on ascention to the rank and title Yo Dan Renshi (4th degree black belt).

Sensei Rodriguez born April 21, 1957 in Brooklyn, New York and raised on the East Villiage aka Lower East Side(Loisada). Affectionately known as Eddie to his friends, at the age of eight, started his martail arts training with Ho Hun Pon Academy of Self Defense in Chinatown,NYC. I recruited him into NISEI GOJU RYU, when I was teaching at the Madison - Hamilton House (circa 1970). I took him to the NISEI GOJU HEADQUARTERS to train with me and Grand Master Ruiz. Sensei Rodriguez also did some training with GM Ronald Morgan Taganashi (Founder: America Te) and GM Rex Lee (Founder: Lee Jitsu Ryu).

Sensei Rodriguez, a retired correction officer for the City of New York, is also a motorcycle enthusiast who is a member of the ENFORCER MOTORCYCLE CLUB. He will soon begin classes the Margate, Florida area.

Renshi Rodriguez, wear the new rank in good health. God keep you the palm of his hand and keep you working for your system, NISEI GOJU RYU and thank you for your support.

1st FEMALE BLACK FROM INDIA / NISEI GOJU ADVANCE CLASS 2/28

Congratulations to ANJURANI on receiving her black belt from her instructor, Sensei Konda from Hyderabad in Central India. Anjurani was born in Wanaparty near Hyderabad Andhra Pradesh, India. She is the 1st female Nisei Goju Black Belt in India. RIGHT ON!!! She will inspire many of the young students to do well. We are proud of the Nisei Goju group in India.

Keep up the good work Anjurani. Empowering the women in the martial arts is an important thing. After all, without mothers(first teachers), there would never be grand masters.

U.O.T.S. PRESERVATION CAMPAIGN, JAN.14,2010

I would like to send my regards to those brothers and sisters who travel east and do the work of the Grand Architect of the Universe.

We at the University of the Streets and the Nisei Goju Martial Arts Systems are having a fund raiser on January 14, 2010 from 5:30 PM until ? for our continual survival in our service to the community.

The fund raiser will feature music performed by various jazz bands, fusion bands and vocalists. We will also have a silent auction of art work done by the member of the art community, as well as objects donated for the purpose raising funds. In addition to these, we will serve food and drinks. You can become a Patron, Sponsor, Friend, or if you desire to purchase individual tickets @ $25.
We here at the University of the Streets and the Nisei Goju Martial Arts are very proud of the work we have done in the community turning some lives around in our efforts to better their lives. St Croix's New Nisei Goju Group

Before I start, I would like to send my best wishes to my brothers and sisters who travel east and do the work of the Grand Architect of the Universe.

After having discarded the BAD, I visited the U.S. Virgin Island of St Croix to, as they say, keep the GOOD. I left N.Y.C. at 8:55 AM and arrived on the Island about 6:00 PM. I was greeted, at the Airport, by second degree black belt, Sempai Maritza Rijos, the leader of New Nisei Goju Group in St. Croix. After settling in the place in which I stayed, we went right away to a public outdoor training area in Vialco Park.

While there for a couple hours, we reviewed the katas (forms) and kihon (Basic skills) not taught by the group's previous instructor. It's good to have a sincere representative, who is loyal to the system. Many masters say, in order to give life meaning you must do something that is greater than the yourself. We are very proud of the work she is doing to preserve the Nisei Goju Tradition set forth by its founder, the honorable Grand Master Frank Ruiz.

There, I taught a number of classes for the students. During these classes, not only did we review katas and the kihon, we went over class structure from warm up to cool down activities.
The class also cover ippon kumite(one step sparring exercises) and free style kumite(fighting). With two-two hour class in the morning and late afternoon on each of those days. The last class, we held on Sunday, lasted for about four hours with the review of the weekends work, as well as, review of some weapons(Bo, Sais, Katana) katas. Hope they enjoyed the feedback. I also got a chance to spar with some of the colored belts of the group, that was fun. I was also afforded the opportunity to watch Sempai Rijos work out that Saturday morning (7 to 10 AM), with the US Virgin Island's Olympic Tae Kwan Do under Coach Eugene Phipps, a competent Martial Artist and genuine person. To be part of any Olympic Team is an honor for the participant who represents their land in the games. Sempai Rijos: YOU GO GIRL!!!

All in all, I had a good trip and got a lot of work done.

May the Grand Architect of the Universe keep the New Nisei Group in the palm of his hand and keep them working, serving their community for Nisei Goju Ryu.

Happy Birthday Grandmaster Frank Ruiz 1934-1995

Salutations to those who travel east and do the work of the Grand Architect of the Universe.

Grand Master Frank Ruiz, Founder of Nisei Goju Ryu, July 2, 1934 - June 20th 1995. He would have been 66 years today.

He was credited for having assembled some of the many karate champions of the era under one battle flag, the Nisei Goju Ryu Organization. Grand Master Ruiz's history in the martial arts is well documented.

I was a brown belt when I first met the grand master. I was taken to the Master Skipper Ingham's mid-town Dojo by Master Owen Watson (my 1st teacher). Grand Master Ruiz looked at me and asked Master Watson, "What's he doing here?". Master Watson said, " for disciplinning!". I thought OH! Sh*t and some other choice words. What the hell did I do? I never found out. As soon as I stepped on the floor, the grand master called me over to do kumite (sparring).

The next thing I knew, my face and head were between his foot and the floor. That was an awesome experience. Thanks for touching our lives and for giving us the memories.

NISEI GOJU'S HALL OF SHAME INDUCTEE OF ST.CROIX

The year: August 1994 The magazine: Inside Kung Fu. I wrote a letter that was published in the Martial Arts Insider magazine.

The letter was titled "Hall of Fame or Shame". Reading the letter will give you a better idea of what I'm speaking of.
After corespondance from St. Croix, I received a phone call from a Joshua Espinal and made plans for him to visit the Nisei Goju Hombu Dojo to train in Nisei Goju system for only a week. I recognized his 2nd degree black belt rank. I had learn much later that he had already accepted a 5th degree black in karate and he was co-founder a martial art style called Kaze Senshi. After I googled the name, I found that the name came out of Manga. That's basically a Japanesse Anime (cartoon). I also found Japanesse lyrics from Kaze No Senshi (Song). What a way to name a martial art system. Awarding a young man such a rank was and still is a disservice to the Martial Arts. As for the so called masters who did the diservice, you know who you are, shame on you.

Last year I was approach by one of the grandmasters I knew in the US Virgin Islands, who told me that Mr. Espinal was wearing a fifth degree black belt and my insigner. The photo above shows Mr. Espinal in the middle wearing a Renshi 4th or 5th Dan rank (red and white belt) that I did not approve of. These kinds of ranks are held by older men and not young boys. That's right, in my humble opinion, he was and is still too young for such a rank.

In his desire to achieve notoriety in the martail arts, he has lied to the entire martial art community about his real affiliation with Nisei Goju. He has lied to the people of St Croix and as well as his own students.

This past year he came to New York realizing his error, he said he would rectify the situation. Another lie, as he never corrected his mistake to the public. It was during his last trip to New York City that I realized that he was an incompetent practitioner of the arts.

This past May, I visited his group in St. Croix and came realized again, that he was not doing the right thing for Nisei Goju and continued, after I left, to do the same. Doing the right thing was never in his plans.

I can honestly say that I made a mistake in recognizing him as a sensei in the art that I hold so dear. This past week I received another call from this impostor, saying "you no longer have a Nisei Goju Group in St Croix, thanks for your help".

I can only wonder what other untruths he has spoken about his life in the military, as well as the martial arts. So, he did not destroy the documents of his fantasy nor his renshi obi (5th Dan red and white belt) as he said he did. The best thing he did for Nisei Goju Ryu was to leave and restart his fantasy. I told him to build a reality and not a fantasy. He couldn't even do that right.

So, Espinal, all I can say is, you have disgraced the martial arts and "MAY THE FARCE BE WITH YOU"

GOJU AND THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT

I would like to send my respects to all my brothers who travel east. Remembering that dojos are the free mason organizations of the martial arts, we must remember our responsibilities to our service to society.

I met with Hanshi Malanoski the morning of Thursday, March 12, 2009. He accompanied me to a protest in front of the Housing Authority of the City of Danbury, Connecticut. There we met with the Danbury People's Action Comittee for the Preservation For Public Housing and the CEO of Bri'On'X, Brian Duncan. In the spirit of justice, we at Bri'On'X, thank Hanshi Malanoski for standing up with us and the people of Danbury against injustice.

1ST NISEI GOJU RYU ADVANCE CLASS REPORT

This passed weekend I hosted the Nisei Goju Ryu System's Advance class for members of the martial arts community ranked brown belt and above. The class began with falling skills for safety. Than continued with the break down of the jujitsu inherent in the katas of the goju style.

Everyone had a wonderful time. Thanks to those who attended and hope you got something new to work on. It was nice to have Hanshi Steven "Iron Hands" Malanoski of Shobudo Goju Jitsu (the original) and Hanshi Kevin McGrath of Little Dojo in attendance. Others in attendance were Sensei Luis Mercado (NYC), Sensei Joshua Espinal and Sempai Maritza "Tiger Woman" Rijos From the United States Virgin Island of St Croix, Sempai Mark Muhammed (East Orange, New Jersey), Sempai Carl Marin (Brewster, New York), Evan Baker (NYC), Sensei John Garavuso (NYC), Brenden Burke (NYC), and John Santiago (Long Island).

These classes will be held every fourth sunday of the month. Brown belts and above from any martial arts style are welcomed.

NISEI GOJU RYU - ADVANCE CLASS COMMENCES

I would like to wish everyone a Happy Inauguration of our New Leader, in this moment of history, President Barack Hussain Obama. The time has come for all men to come to the aid of their country. God Bless America. A proud day for America to see the first American with African roots take the oath of the President of the United States of America. Stand tall America!

OH! YES WE DID.

In Celebrating the new president, we must all find common ground for our mutual growth and Unity. NISEI GOJU RYU is proud invite all to our monthly advanced classes in the ju jitsu applications of the goju katas and well as a well rounded stand up ju jitsu education.

The class will open to all members of the martial arts community with ranks Brown Belts and above. Class will happen on the fourth Sunday of each month, starting Sunday, February 22, 2009. It will begin at 1 pm and end at 4 pm. It will cover a wide range of skills, including basic throwing and falling techniques, joint locks, Etc. Representatives from the US Virgin Islands, India, and various locations in the United States will be in attendance.

NEW YEAR EVE CELEBRATION AT THE UNIVERSITY OF THE STREET

Come and ring in the new year with us at the University of the Streets and Nisei Goju Hombu Dojo in the East Villiage (L.E.S.). The star of the Show will be Elisabeth Withers, Tony Award Nominated as Shug Avery in THE COLOR PURPLE. ROLDAN ON ABC'S LIFE ON MARS

In the beginning of July, I retired from my job as a physical and martial arts educator for NYC's Department of Education. I've spent 28 years of my life teaching science, math, special education,health and physical education.

Now I spend my time developing the Nisei Goju curriculum and resurrecting my acting career of the early seventies. It nice to be back in the business.

Since the beginning of September. I have been a student of acting at the famous LEE STRAUSBERG THEATRE & FILM INSTITUTE. When you hear Strausberg, you think method acting.
It's a pleasure to be a student again. I'm a under belt again in another art, that of Method Acting, that has also been referred as the SYSTEM. During the past two summers, I've done some background work the NBC series LAW AND ORDER and ABC's LIFE ON MARS. Now, I am meeting some very interesting people in the business and look forward to working with them.

This past summer I was very fortunate to work with Jason O'Mara, Harvey Keitel, Micheal Imperioli, and Gretchen Mol on the set of LIFE ON MARS. I worked on two episodes in the series and had a wonderful time working on episode five. Whoopi Goldberg was the guest star of show and is truly, a funny lady. Sorry I did not get a photo with her. Friends tell me she from Avenue D on the lower east side. That my neighborhood!

I also met on the set of LIFE ON MARS, John Cenatiempo and his brother Chris. Actually, it was Chris who introduced me to John. John Cenatiempo is the stunt coordinator on the set. I witnessed them blow up a car on the set on third street on the lower east side of Manhattan, really great work. It was nice to Chuck Zito, who was playing a cop in the middle of riot. I got the chance to meet some stuntmen who were also martial artists and that was a good thing.
Although, I was doing background, I hope to land a speaking role in the future. Wish me luck. In the photos from LIFE ON MARS episode 5 "Things to do in New York When You Think You're Dead" are Micheal Imperioli as Detective Ray Carling and me in the background. SILVER CUP INTERNATIONAL KARATE CHAMPIONSSHIPS 2008

In the middle of August 2008, I attended the SILVER CUP INTERNATIONAL KARATE CHAMPIONSHIPS to support my friend, Grand Master Manny Saavedra, who hosted the event. The directors of the tournament were Kyoshi Arturo Espina and Kyoshi Joe Anon. The event took place at the Sheraton Mart Hotel and Convention center in Miami. I was picked up by GM Saavedra, after I got off the plane at Miami International Airport. After checking into the hotel, we went to the ballroom to watch the competition a little while before we went to dinner. It was an early night.

The main show of the tournament began on Saturday evening with the audience standing up to hear the Our National Anthem "The Star Spangled Banner". With our hands over our hearts in a patriotic fashion, we could hear "Amazing Grace" over the sound system. O0ps! Wrong song! God Bless America!!

At the tournament, I met Nisei Goju Black Belts, Renshi Danny Lemus 5Th Dan, Renshi Kevin Fookes 4Th Dan, and their students. It was nice to see them. Hailing from the USVI of Saint Croix were Nisei Black Belts, Sensei Joshua Espinal 2nd Dan, Sempai Maritza Rijos 2nd Dan, and some of their students. Before I flew down to Florida, I made prearrangements with Kyoshi Pogliani 7th Dan to put on a demonstration at the tournament. At the tournament site, I wished everyone "Peace be onto you" in English, Hebrew and Arabic. When I said it in Arabic, you could hear a pin drop. Out of the silence, you could hear karate champion Kyoshi Abdul Aziz say in a audible voice "wah alai kum salaam". Thanks Abdul. During a break from the fighting Kyoshi Pogliani and I did our demonstration. I performed the Kata Hakutsura of Nisei Goju Ryu. After I did the kata, Kyoshi Jordi Lang and I bend two rebars on the neck of Kyoshi Pogliani. The re bars were two inches in diameter and made of steel. On cue, we walked in with the rebars in our hands and saw them bending, a fantstic feat of power and control requiring great concentration. Thank you Grand Master Saavedra for allowing us to perform.

It was also nice to see former member of Nisei Goju, Herbie Thompson 7th Dan and some his students. I also was stopped by Sensei Renni Whitehead, whom I did not recognized, sorry about that Sensei Whitehead.

Before I left Miami, I was approached by Kyoshi Arturo Espina. He thanked me for attending the events and with a big smile gave me a promotional package for a cruise. I thanked him. After investigating the package, I realized that is was almost impossible to fulfill the requirements of giving three possible weekends dates and three different locations. Thanks Kyoshi but, no thanks.

All in all, I had a nice time seeing some of the old timer of Florida karate as well as well as the future of the NISEI GOJU RYU MARTIAL ARTS SYSTEMS. Thanks you to the Nisei Goju black belts in good standing for supporting the NISEI GOJU HOMBU DOJO in NYC.

POST THANKSGIVING GREETING PLUS

It is my hope that everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving celebration and are looking forward to the Christmas Holiday Season. I would like to be the first to wish all of you, a Merry Christmas and a A Happy, Healthy, and a Prosperous New Year (2009). It has been a while since I posted anything on my blog.

The last post as you all know was about my friend and dojo brother Kyoshi Earl Monroe R.I.P. On Thursday the morning of August 21st, before I received that phone call about Earl, I had gotten a phone call from my twin sister Haydie that my father Juan Roldan (5/16/24 - 8/21/08) had stop breathing and had passed. My lord took him home. I dropped what I was doing and went to my fathers house on Madison Street on the Lower East Side of Manhattan to be with my sisters, brothers and the members of my family. We buried my father alongside my mother Justina Roldan Garcia at the Pine Lawn Cemetery on Long Island. Some friends, martial artists, and well wishers attended the Wake at Peter Jarema Funeral Home across the street from the Nisei Goju Hombu Dojo on seventh street. The reason I did not post this information during that time was that I wanted it to be of a private nature, thank you for understanding. The photo above is my father Juan Roldan, who was eightyfour at the end of his life here on earth and the begining of his after life in the bossom of my lord. I will always miss him, as he was my first teacher and mentor.

After the school term ended June 28, 2008, I retired from my job with the NYC Department of Education after twenty eight years of teaching physical and health education at the high school level. I thank the my lord for having given the opportunity to work as an physical educator and martial arts educator for my people in the city. During my career I met a lot of wonderful teachers and students alike. Every once and a while, I would be stop by former students who thanked me for the work I did with them. Those who thanked me were successes in their own right. I once met a former student at JFK Airport. who after becoming a dancer, was on tour of the United States' major cities. I have a few of students, including two brothers from the high school at the dojo training and moving up the rank structure of Nisei Goju. One day, if they do the work hard and persevere, they will reach the coveted Black Belt. I wish them luck. Now, I spend most of my time training and teaching the martial arts to the next generation of true Nisei Goju Black Belts.

Thank you for allowing me to share my memories of my father with you in celebration of his life, as well as, my life as a educator. I know look forward to working on this blog in the future with new information about Nisei Goju and its members in good standing.

PILLAR OF NISEI GOJU PASSES- Earl Monroe,Kyoshi Remembered

It is with deep sorrow that I inform you of the passing Earl Monroe (5/9/37 - 8/19/08).

On the 21 of August, 2008, I received a call about the passing of Kyoshi Monroe. Earl Monroe, Kyoshi was a pillar and icon of the Nisei Goju Ryu System.

Grandmaster Ruiz used to call him Earl "The Pearl of Karate" Monroe.

Before his karate days, Earl Monroe received his black in judo while stationed in West Germany during his time serving his country in the U.S. Army. Continuing his martial art education in Ju Jitsu at the Yudan Shi kai with Theodore West. He also trained some with Antonio Periera(Miyama Ryu Ju Jitsu) and Florendo Visitaticion(Vee Jitsu Ryu Ju Jitsu). Dedicating his life to the martial arts, he climbed the rank structure and gained the level of San Dan 3 degree black belt.

In the mid sixties, he began his training in Nisei Goju's founder Frank Ruiz. Kyoshi Monroe fell in love with the Goju system and was proficient practitioner. His years of dedication saw him attain the level of Ruku Dan, six degree black belt master teacher. He produced a number of black blacks in the Bronx and Westchester to his credit. He was also one of the heavy hitters of Nisei, as well as, a national karate champion. He was one of my martials arts inspirations, Thanks Earl.

The first time I met Master Monroe, we were both green belt in goju. I traveled to the Westchester School of Judo and Ju Jitsu to take part in the class given by then Sensei Frank Ruiz, Yodan Renshi. The class bowed in for a vigorous and brutal work out. The Classes always ended with Jiu Kumite (soft free fighting), that was really Go (hard) Kumite. I Finally Squared off with then karate green belt Earl Monroe. Something always told me, this was no ordinary green belt. A great fighter, he was known for his sweep and reverse punch combination. As we exchange techniques, I spun around and hit the side of his head with a hook kick. I thought I broke my foot. Being a Taurus, he was a bull and was also known as Mr. Reverse Punch. In that first sparring session, my suspicions were made real. Before I knew it, he swept me off my and I was looking up at the ceiling wondering , What the $%%$?. How I avoided the punch, I'll never know. After the class, I walked into the front office to say good bye to my new dojo brother, when Grand Master Ruiz, reintroduced me to Earl Monroe. It was that day that I was reintroduced to Earl Monroe, Ju Jitsu Sensei. I jumped to attention gave proper courtesy in the goju traditional manner USO!!!

I personally believe that I am a better man for knowing Kyoshi Monroe. He was and will always be remembers as my big brother and inspiration of the martial arts.

Rest in peace my big brother, your service to your parents and the martial arts were exemplary. Please have a moment of silence in your home or dojo for this Pillar of Nisei Goju, EARL MONROE,KYOSHI.

13th ANNIVERSARY - FOUNDER: FRANK RUIZ'S PASSING

June 20, 2008, marks the 13th anniversary of the passing of the founder of NISEI GOJU RYU (THE SYSTEM), Grand Master Frank Ruiz 1934-1995. The history of the grand master's personal martial evolution is well documented.

GM. Frank Ruiz was responsible for assembling and training some of the greatest figthers, kata and weapons performers of Karate's golden era under one flag, NISEI GOJU. Thomas "LaPuppet" Carol(Nisei Shotokan), Carlos "Charlie" Cuprill, Luis Delgado (Ruiz's most famous student), Nathan "Skipper" Ingham (Bermuda Te), John Giordano , Malachi Lee (Isshin Ryu), Earl "The Pearl" Monroe, Wilfredo Roldan(present grand master of NISEI GOJU), Harry Rosenstein (Kan Zen Goju), Carlos Serrano(Ruiz's 1st black belt), Joe Serrano, Alex Sternberg (Nisei Shotokan), Ron Taganashi, Herbie Thompson, Owen "Obosan" Watson (Twin Dragon Goju), Bill Wendell(Mushin Goju), Ron "Black Dragon" Van Clief (Chinese Goju), Chaka "The Snake" Zulu (Zu Jitsu Ryu). He touched allot of lives. He is missed by those he touched.

I remember the first demonstration he performed, after he discarded his krutches. I was his uke, we worked with a live blade. G.M. Ruiz always wanted to be attacked for real A true founding father of the american martial arts movement.

MR. AND MRS WOLF AT MONSTER MANIA

It was a great pleasure meeting Mr. and Mrs. Wolf. I don't remember the names of those in costumes, but I had a great time with them at the Sci-Fi Convention MONSTERMANIA. Of all the costumes The wolf's was very realistic and could scare the pants of some people.

Make-up artists, actors, vendors, autograph seeker and the like attended this event. At one particular time at the center was very crowded. It was hard moving around. Never the less, everyone seemed be having a wonderful time.

MONSTER MANIA 08 DAVID, ROLDAN & PIPER

Here I am with the two Stars of the Sci-Fi Thriller - THEY LIVE, Keith David and Roddy Piper. I am the guy in the middle.

THEY LIVE featured the longest fight scene in movie history(mentioned in earlier post). It even made the GUINNESS WORLD BOOK OF RECORD. An awesome achievement by any standard.

Roddy Piper is a former wrestling champion turned actor. Behind him are photos of his fighting and filming sessions.

Both Keith and Roddy are men respected in the field that they are in.

I enjoy the time spent with them. It was really exciting.

Here Freddy Kruger of NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET fame decided to join Keith David, the SPAWN, and W. Roldan for a photo-op. Freddy's the guy on your right. How I got to MONSTER MANIA? Later on, I'll tell you about it. Mean while, enjoy the pictures.

I tried recommending a dermotologist to Freddy but he said I was the one with the skin condition. Who am I to argue. No NIGHTMARES for me on ELMS street.

MONSTER MANIA 2008 MARCH 15-16 HOW I GOT THERE

In the begining of March I received a call from my friend and student Josh Silver. He invited me to accompany him and Keith David, a prominent actor/performing artist, to a Sci-Fi Convention at the Crown Plaza in Cherry Hill, New Jersey close to Philidelphia. I've never been to a Convention like this. It was awesome!!!

A couple of days prior to the event, Josh called me and told me he was not going to be able to attend the convention. He hurt his back and had to stay in bed for more than a couple of days. It turn out to be a work weekend because of Josh's injury. We missed him at the convention. It was a pleasure to work with Keith David. Keith David is a film and stage actor, singer, and performer. A number of actors I know call him an actor's actor. One of the greatest comnpliments one could achieve in the arts. Keith has many films to his credit: They Live with Roddy Piper, filming the longest fight scene in cinematic history, The Thing with Kurt Russel, Fast Feet on Broadway, Crash, Something about Mary Etc, Etc. I could go on. Above in the photo are Keith David, THE SPAWN, and yours truely. Keith Did the voice over for the HBO Series THE SPAWN.

The event was called MONSTER MANIA 2008. It was a horror fan's heaven. Keith Sign autographs for fans. It was exciting to see the enthusiam of the fans. People of all ages enjoyed the event. It was the first time Keith David saw a action figure of charactor he portrayed in the movie "Platoon". There were people in monster costumes, vender and other famous actor and actresses like Tom Waits (Star: THE WARRIORS) and Jobeth Willlaims (Star: POLTERGEIST).

I had a preview of the convention site's booths and fasinating displays. That was fun. I spent the rest of the time working with Keith David and the many fans that attended MONSTER MANIA.

I met some great people on this trip and learned alot. It was a pleasure working with Keith at the convention. By the time I got home, I was exhausted and went to sleep with great memories. That's what life is about. Stay safe, sound, and never lose the kid inside of you.

JUAN ROLDAN - MY FIRST TEACHER

Parents are usually the first gods that a person knows. In being our first deities, they really are our first teachers. Born in San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico in 1923, Juan Roldan arrived on the main land of the United States on March 18, 1952. We first moved to Reading, Pennsylvania. I was really too young to remember. A year or so, my father told me, we moved to New York City. We lived on 15th Street and Irving Place, before some of the high risers were erected. We winded up on 11th street between Avenue B and C, (L.E.S.), a pretty tough neigborhood. We lived in a rail road flat at 636 East Eleventh Street(building demolished). A poor up bringing, but, we were happy.

A working class man who worked in the sheet metal industry as a polisher, Juan would always insisted we spoke Spanish in the house and be on time for family dinner. The family always ate together. At dinner he would tell stories about growing up in Puerto Rico, family, and his hopes and dreams for us.
I still remember going to his union job in Brooklyn, N.Y. I was amazed, impressed and realized he was a hard worker. He was a union man. I learned my work ethics from him. I remembered asking him, if I could work there when I grew up. He laughed at me and said in his broken English at the time "I think you can do a whole lot better if you get a good education".. That meant, doing your homework and the best you can. I attribute the my 27 years in the field of education to my fathers desires for me to have a better life. Thanks Pops

Now at eighty four, my father went through two operations on an aortic artery associated with his abdomen. It was a rough stretch and we could have lost him. His will to live helped him overcome the procedures. Kick ass Pops!! He is now at a Bellvue Hospital's Medical Intensive Care Unit healing his wounds and getting ready to go into a physical therapy program.

I'll be retiring from my day job and looking forward to hanging out with my father again. I sure he has other life's lesson to teach me. Please Keep him your prayers.

SERVICE TO NISEI GOJU AND ITS GRAND MASTER

A friend of mine, while looking at the plaques and awards on my walls, told me to place some of the awards on my blog. I said I did not have reasons to put the awards on my blog. He countered that by saying "people should know about your service to NISEI GOJU and its GRANDMASTER, FRANK RUIZ.

Early in the month of July 1970, Grand master Ruiz was struck by a car traveling 80 mph, while fixing a flat on the Brooklyn Queens Expressway in New York City. A sad day For Nisei Go Ju and the martial arts world. He got his ribs, arms and legs broken. He also sustained a number of skull fractures.

During his recovery, he would send me to the different Nisei Go Ju Schools to do his bidding.
I went to dojos all over the tri state area and the south to help the black belts brush up on Nisei Go Ju knowledge and skills. I was also fortunate to be placed at the helm of the NISEI GOJU WORLD HEAD QUARTERS.
It was a great pleasure to service the system and its grand master in that capacity.

Serving and supporting a martial system is a basic responsibility of all its black belts. This is done by remittance of annual dues and promotion fees. There are no martial arts organiations that work in a vacuum. All martials arts organization need the support of its membership. Last month Senior Renshi
Danny Lemus from Mira Mar, Florida sent me a Bold Black Ghi for christmas, thanks you Renshi Lemus. Junior Renshi keeps putting us on the you tube, I thank Renshi Fookes for giving us more exposure. Phone calls from Sempai Mitch Rosenberg from Baltimore, Maryland and Sensei Edwin Rodriguez from Margate, Florida were pleasant. It was nice to hear from them. Thank you all for your support.

Remember the NISEI GOJU SYSTEM will grow with support from its members.

SAMURAI JU JITSU HOMBU DOJO EARLY SEVENTIES

Sundays at the SAMURAI JU JITSU HOMBU DOJO was rough to say the least. No nonsense training Samurai Ju Jitsu is a hard core ju jitsu style founded be Pete Siringano I. In the forefront of the photo I am getting ready to be thrown by one of my dojo brothers.

One day at these classes, the grand master ask for a volunteer. I was the first to get up. He turn and said "No Ro, I want you to see this one". I said, I would like to feel it before I see it. No soon as my mouth uttered that last word of that statement, I felt my body levitating towards the wall. Lighting speed I did not see where his hand came from but felt his fingers disappearing in my chest cavity. It was a spear hand.

Muhammad Salahuddeen (1930 - 2007) was the founder of the UNIVERSITY of the STREETS. A place where youth of the community would come to learn basic electricity, plumbing, and carpentry to prepare themselves to go into construction or other fields. Most of the students in the program also received their High School Diplomas. The university offers classes in music in the form of vocal workshops, musical instrument instruction, music theory, art, jam sessions and of course martial arts.
I am very proud to say that Muhammad was one of my teachers of life and Islam. Happy to be here since the begining, I've seen the growth of many people , myself included, at the university. Muhammad's dedication to the University of the Streets was evidence of the institution's relationship with the community. I am happy to continue the legacy here at the U.O.T.S. and its open door policy. The Nisei Goju Hombu Dojo heads their martial arts department offering classes in Tai Chi Chuan Yang Style,Tai Chi Sword, Nisei Go Ju Karate, Ju Jit su, and Nisei Arnis Jitsu. We continue with our duty to the University of the Streets.

*On Saturday January 27, 2008, The University of the Streets and I invite you to a Benefit Memorial for Muhammad and University of the Streets. It's going to be a blast. Starting at 3pm- until with musical selections by performing artists from all over. Great food, drinks, and music will be served, AWESOME. I'll be one of the hosts of the event. I hope you can make it. Help us continue keeping the legacy of Muhammad's Dream, THE UNIVERSITY OF THE STREETS ALIVE.

Muhammad Salahuddeen will be missed by the many lives that he has touched.

RENSHI FOOKES'S STUDENTS VICTORIOUS

Renshi Kevin Fookes's student did their jobs as Nisei men. Milton Pinto Jr. and Dennis Carrier are in picture with their trophies. Milton took first place in kata and kumite. Dennis took second in both kata and kumite. Renshi Fookes is very proud of his student, as he should be. I am very proud of the work Kevin is doing for NISE GOJU, Keep up the good work Kevin. Here at the hombu dojo, we have seen many of the video you posted on you tube. Thank you for your work.

Sifu Celso Davila and Sifu-Guro Edwin Pagan

Here Sifu-Guru Edwin Pagan and one of his teachers. Sifu Davila was Edwin Pagan"s teacher in Puerto Rico. Edwin spoke very highly of Sifu Davila and his training methods.

Edwin Pagan was a creature that absorbed martial knowledge like a sponge. He got the opportunity of sharing his knowledge about his arts with me. I really enjoyed working out with Sifu-Guru Pagan. Pagan was a good training partner. He was one of my first stick fighting teachers. Edwin Pagan's hero was Bruce Lee. He always aspired to Lee's Ideals. He looked up to Gm Richard Bustillo, Sifu Celso Davila and Sifu Efrain Seda. These were the teachers that showed him the ropes. His students were fortunate to have him as a teacher. It's a shame he left this life at such a young age.

Always the character, Edwin would always find things to laugh about. This was part of his make up. Very pleasant to be around, he had a way of making people feel welcomed. He had a charismatic personality that drew people in like a magnet. Many people wish they had this trait. Peace to all.

KYOSHI FRANK POGLIANI - BREAKER OF BREAKERS

Kyoshi Frank Pogliani is a Sichi Dan (7th Degree Black Belt) in the NISEI GOJU FAMILY. He trained with the late GM Peter Urban Founder: USA GOJU and Gm. Frank Ruiz Founder: NISEI GOJU. Master Pogliani was known for his expertise, Tamashiwari: the art of breaking. He performed some awesome breaks. I remember seeing him break 5 or 6 hugh marble slabs, a beautiful break as the slabs went through the floor of the gym. Kyoshi Pogliani and his lady Libby live in the Hudson Valley in upstate New York. About a month ago Hanshi Steven L, Malanoski, Sensei Luis Antonio Mercado and I went to visit the Kyoshi at his barnhouse. His barn house had a dojo witha body building equiment area, horses, chickens, and deers that would come around to eat the apples off the trees. Kyoshi is a avid hunter. In his house his has the trophies of the hunt on his wall. Pretty far out. It reminded my of the most dangerous game, a movie about a hunter eho hunted humans. There were boar heads and deer heads mounted on wooden plaques.

It was great exchanging knowledge, we learned three bo katas from G.M. Malanoski (he knows his stuff). The form came from the ARAKAKI FAMILY KOBUDO SYSTEM. Malanoski learned a sword form from YANG STLYE OF TAI CHI CHAUN. It was a great weekend for all of us. We enjoyed the country air, tranquility, and the martail knowledge. It was nice to be able to see the stars you can't see in the city. We hope to return sometime before the year is out or in the spring. Thanks Kyoshi Pogliani for sharing your world with us.

SENSEI RON BRIE AT THE IMB ACADEMY OF ORLANDO

Doing the two man set we call the humanized makiwara. Some of the Okinawan systems call these exercises arm pounding. In the photo Sensei Ron Brie (Yon Dan Renshi) practices the set using a Phoenix Fist (one knuckle punch) and simultaneous open hand parry with a a seminar buddy. These exercises are done in stationary postures, as well as, moving forward and back. After this was done, it would be done walking the Pa Kwa Circle. Sensei Brie trained with other teachers and never once did he remove his NISEI patch from his chest. Thank You Sensei Brie. Loyalty to a system and/or its grand master is very important for a martial art system's growth, knowing well that the student's development is of paramount importance.

SIFU - GURU EDWIN PAGAN'S ORLANDO IMB ACADEMY

I used to give seminars at Edwin Pagan's IMB Academy of Orlando. I did a few seminars in the art of NISEI ARNIS JITSU at the IMB Academy and was received with great respect.

In front of the portrait of Lee Jun Fan (Bruce Lee's chinese name) are Sifu Efrain "Quico" Seda, Sifu-Guru Edwin Pagan and myself.

After doing a empty hand part of the seminar at the IMB in Orlando, I was approached by Sifu Efrian Seda. He said the exercises we were doing he learned at the Shaolin Temple in San Francisco. I later found out he spent ten years at the temple as a monk. After hounding the monks at the temple for a couple of weeks he was allowed to become a member of the temple. He worked at the temple for a year before he was taught any martial arts. Before he left the temple he was tested by a council of 12 monks(elders). That must have been tough.

Edwin Pagan is the founder of the TODO EXTREME MARTIAL ART SYSTEM as well as a former member of the IMB (International Martial Arts and Boxing) ACADAMIES under the directorship of Black Belt Hall of Famer, Grand Master Richard Bustillo (Chairman: Jeet Kune Do Society) from Carson, California. Training over 27 years Sifu-Guru Pagan became a leading authority of Jeet Kune Do's second generation. He also trained with Sifu Celso Davila and Sifu Efrain "Quico" Seda. His life was that of a man who was dedicated to the development of his mind and body. In great shape for his martial arts pratice, Sifu-Guro Pagan was determined to start his own style. On my advice, he started forming his own martial art system, TODO EXTREMO, consisting of long, mid, and short fighting range methods.

Edwin is also my cousin on my mother side. As a young kid, he would always say, I want to do the martial arts like you. There was no stopping him. Soon, he found himself practicing the arts of war that we cherish. Edwin was my closest cousin. He also taught me some of the skills he learned from his mentor and teacher GM Richard Bustillo and some of his other teachers. Sifu-Guro Pagan will be missed by all of us who knew and loved him. HAPPY HOLLOWEEN / V for VENDETTA

Halloween Night , I was V from the movie "V for Vendetta". A very powerful movie about the United Kingdom's future totalitrian Government and its downfall.

A great movie, I recommend you see it (I saw it three times). Good fight scenes and the dialog was eloquent. V carries with a set of knifes, which he throw with deadly accuracy and his emty hands skills are great. The eloquence in which V speaks has a flowing beauty that only the most strong and sensitive poet can utter.

JULIAN SUMMERHILL AND HIS LADY MARGO

Last weekend, I was visited by my black belt from California, Julian Summerhill and his lady Margo. Being that they lives in the San Francisco area, I rarely get a chance to see them. We had a wonderful dinner at, probably, the classiest resturant in Chinatown, the PEKING DUCK HOUSE. The duck was succulent and the company was great.

In the photo with me are Margo, Jullian Summerhill and Steve Malonoski.

We spoke about the possiblity of their returning to NEW YORK. Well, Julian and Margo, We look forward to your return to NYC and the Dojo. We miss you guys.

A true son of NISEI GOJU, Kevin, after the death of Grand Master Ruiz, he called and pledged loyalty to the NISEI SYSTEM and its new grand master. Thank you Kevin!!!!

Others who trained with Hanshi Frank Ruiz, also pledged to do the same,but fell very short of doing anything that even resembled loyal acts. A few of those people either went to new organizations or started their own version of the goju style. There are those who say Goju Ryu, but when you see them work, do you see goju. I don't think so. You know who you are.

We wish these instructors the very best in martial arts.

GOSHINDO KEMPO / SAMURAI JIU JITSU HOMBU DOJ0 70'S

In the early seventies, every Sunday, I used to go to train with the Founder of the Goshindo Kempo Karate & Samurai Jiu Jitsu Association, Grand Master Pete Siringano (1928-1994). A long way to travel to learn some really good stuff. Continuing in his father's traditions is Grand Master Pete Siringano II.

I give thanks for the experiences I have had in the Hombu dojo of the Samurai Jiu Jitsu System. I don't remember the ones in the photo, but that's me in the forefront and dead center. The work outs were ferocious and real to life. I learned a lot from one of the founding fathers of east coast martial arts. GM Frank Ruiz and GM Pete Siringano were known as the Damon and Pythias of the martial arts world. GM. Pete Siringano I turned over his systems to his son, my brother in arms and my good friend Pete Siringano II. Keep kicking it Pete!

FLORIDA TOURNEY-WE'RE LEAVING ON A JET PLANE

Getting ready to leave for Florida are Duncan Munro (United Kingdom), Ron Brie (USA), Mark Brodsky the limo driver and myself (in shorts).

Duncan Munro, former V.P. for Pepsi Cola, runs the Fuller Brewry in England. He is also my representative in the U. K.

Ron Brie is a Junior Renshi in the NISEI SYSTEM and a Long Term Care Specialist (ronaldbrie@msn.com).

Mark Brodsky the driver, was a member of the dojo during that time. He ran a few flower shops , was an excellent florist and student of NISEI GOJU.

I had a great time with Ron and Duncan while visiting Grand Master Ruiz at his home and at the tournament.

LEE'S TOURNAMENT- RENSHI LEMUS

It was great being able to hang with the grand master at the tournament. Sensei Daniel Lemus and unknown person here being advised by Hanshi F. Ruiz. Sensei Lemus is a Senior Renshi in the Nisei System. Sensei Lemus is one of black belts of NISEI that return into the true fold of NISEI.

The NISEI family is begining to see an international resurgence with the reestablishment of Dojos in the Virgin Island of St Croix under Sensei Joshua Espinal and our first dojo in India with Sensei Sreenivasulu Konda of Hyderabad.

We're looking for a few good instructor who care about true standards as a united system of martial arts. If anyone is interested in reaffiliating with our martial family, call me anytime at 212 674 6477.

SENSEI BRUCE RUBIN 1947-2003 REMEMBERED

Bruce Rubin was an teacher for the New York City Department of Education, a photographer, master diver (search and rescue), and a SanDan (3rd degree black belt) in the NISEI GOJU SYSTEM.

Bruce was a man of stature. One of the fearless men that traveled all over the world for real knowledge of the places one only dreams about. I could only name few of the place he has visited. Places like Africa, the Middle East, China, and I think Tibet, all sounded fascinating. The momentos his came back home with were totally awesome. One of my favorites was a monkey or human skull with silver and jewels that were inlayed. Some fine work of Art.
He was a great teacher of children, who also taught me some stuff about education. We lost Bruce in 2003. He is survived by his Wife Sondra and daugthers Jennifer and Lily. Here he is with some of his students (Lily is in his right arm) in the old Brewster Dojo of Nick Spennicchia.
We will all miss this gentle giant .

I was talking to Shihan Carlos Velez, who is a martial arts journalist. He told me that it was about time for me to write about my martial arts exploits.

Thinking of what he said, I remember F. Ruiz, reiterating that at my level of training, "The pen is mightier that the sword". P. G. Urban also told me the same thing in his own word as follows "Publish or perish".

This photo was taken at a tournament honoring Grand Master F. Ruiz. I had the honor and the privilage wheeling F. Ruiz around that day. I took care of my teacher that weekend and accompanied him all over the place.
Lots of Nisei people and well as other martial artists were in attendance. Rex Lee (Lee Jitsu Ryu) hosted the event and it was a success. In the picture with me are F. Ruiz and S.L. Malanoski (Shobudo "The origenal" GoJu Jitsu). It was a pleasure to be with the grand master that weekend. We spoke alot about the future of NISEI GOJU and the direction he wanted it to go. In the Florida area F. Ruiz trained a lot of masters in their own right. Some of these masters have started their own Styles. GM. Ruiz taught martial artist from all styles. He turned non fighters into fighters and non martial artist in martial artist of the highest order. He was a great motivator. My best wishes to those that are no longer part of the NISEI FAMILY.

BODHIDHARMA - Warrior Prince of India

This is an image of Bodhidharma, who was credited for bringing Chan (Zen) Buddhism and the martial Arts from India to the Shaolin Temple in China. It is said, that he taught the "Eighteen Hands of the Lohan", Origrnal Chi Kung Exercise. Chi (KI in Japanese) means Energy and Kung means Development. Ergo chi kung means Energy development.
Sanchin Kata is one of the Chi kung exercises taught in the Nisei Goju System.
Sanchin means Three Battles or spirits and it is done with the dynamic tensioning of the muscular anatomy. Having its own internal mantra this kata unifies mind, body, and spirit with the proper breathing technique. Shime are the skills used to test the person practicing the dynamic tension exercise.

SENSEI KONDA NISEI GOJU IN INDIA (Where It All Began)

This is Sensei Sreenivasulu Konda, who is my chief representative in India. He is a San Dan (3rd degree Black Belt)
in the Nisei Family. He lives in the city of Hyderabad, India with his wife Swapna and daugther Laximiamshitha. After communcating with konda, he traveled to the World Head Quarters of the of NISEI GOJU SYSTEM to train.

We are all looking forward to seeing Konda at our family gathering of warriors. I will finally get to meet his family
of which, I only saw pictures.

We all wish Konda and his Family the very best as he grows strong in the NISEI GOJU FAMILY.

It's great to have him with us. Coming from the land of BodhiDarma(Tamo in Chinese, Daruma in Japanese), the holy man who is said to have brought Chan Budhism and martial arts to china from India, where it all began. We have come full circle

Louis Delgado was an icon of the Nisei System. Here, he is on the cover of Black Belt Nov. 69. Having a martial artist of east coast origin on the cover of Black Belt was a rare occurrence back in the day. We were all proud of him as he represented Nisei Goju. I used to watch in awe, as he worked out. Proficient kata man, he was hell of a fighter. He fought all the champions of his day. He even beat Chuck Norris, the lone wolf.

Delgado was one of my martial arts heroes, as well as, the hero many other children who practised martial arts.

Being on the mat with him was fun and educational. A Martial arts legend, I appreciated his advise as a younger brother in the arts. WE WILL MISS HIM. R.I.P

SEMINAR AT SENSEI DANIEL LEMUS'S DOJO

This photo was taken after I did a seminar at Sensei Daniel Lemus's Dojo at a recreation center. Sensei Lemus is one of my chiefs in the Florida and my senior renshi. I really had a wonderful time with children of his dojo. After the workout I took photos with the children and it was great. The children really enjoyed the after seminar activities. The children are our future, so teach them well.

Sensei Lemus has been with the Nisei Family for a long time. He has established Nisei Dojos for over twenty five years. Some are still in the same locations. You all know how rare that is. We are very happy to have back in the fold of the NISEI FAMILY.

Keep up the good work Sensei Lemus. I look forward to doing another seminar at his dojo.

The event was a seminar with Grand Master Manaloski, which was attended by high ranking goju black belts from the in the U.S. and abroad. The seminar cover practical application of Kata Empi Ha. A very good seminar. During the seminar Sensei Lemus pull a hamstring muscle. I hope it healed. Back to work everyone.

I was fortunate to be able train with some of the founding fathers of the American Martial Arts Movement. Here I am on the Cover of Official Karate Magazine YearBook 1974. I thank my teachers for the lessons they taught me. I could not have made it without them.

My first teacher was Sensei Owen Watson, who introduced me to Grand Master Frank Ruiz(Nisei Goju founder), when I was a green belt. Grand Master Ruiz would send me later to train with Grand Master Peter Urban (USA Goju founder) and then to Grand Master Peter Siringano (founder: Samurai Ju jitsu/Goshin Do Kempo Karate). Later on, I was granted permission to trained with Florendo Ma Calruz Visiacion (Founder of the Vee Arnis Jitsu Systems).

Nisei Goju Chest--What Does It Represent

This is the chest patch of the Nisei GoJu Ryu practitioner. It was design by Carlos Serrano and approved by Grand Master Ruiz, Nisei GoJu Ryu's founder. What the Nisei emblem (chest patch) represents. White represents the purity of the cause. Red represent the blood that is shed in combat. Black represents the fraternal order of Black Belts.
