Remembering Grand Master Frank Ruiz Founder of Nisei Goju Ryu

June 20, 2015 is the 20th Anniversary of the death of our beloved Grandmaster Frank Ruiz (Founder:Nisei Goju Original Style), Student of Grandmaster Peter Urban(Founder: USA/Urban Goju).  In 1969 Grandmaster Ruiz was struck by a car traveling at the speed of 80 miles an hour while changing a tire on the Brooklyn Queens Expressway.      There was almost dead silence as we waited to hear about his condition. We thought we were going to lose him. The doctors were puzzled and could not understand why he was still alive. Grand Master cheated death with a distinctive style. His will to live kept him in the struggle of his life. Ruiz with a multitude of injuries, survived, and after a number of year on cructhes, discarded them and walked. I was honored to be part of his rehabilitation as his uke.  Soon after, some of the high ranking members abandoned the system to start their own stlye with their own name.  We wish them all the very best with their styles.  However, there are those who use the Nisei Goju moniker claiming to be the original style and/or those persons who have recognized another person as a grand master in the style after the passing of the grand master.  A friend once told me that if a person lies enough times, some will come to believe them.  One of my teachers once told me to lie to the liars.  I did not take his advice.  There are many versions of a lie but only one version of the truth.  If an instructor lies to his students about their art, what else are they lying about. We believe that usurpers are not impostors, just want be Nisei Goju persons, no matter who recognized them.

Historical Goju Photographs

A couple of old photos from the days before USA & Nisei Goju.  Here in the first photo(Circa 1964.) We have then then Senseis Carlos Serrano and Chuck Merrimen as a Ni Dan. This photo was taken in a big hall on St. Marks Avenue in the bronx.      
  In the second photo we have Sensei Carlos Serrano in the first dojo that was blessed by Grand Master Ruiz as a Nisei Goju Dojo. The name of the dojo was Wa-re Sen Dojo(My instructor's dojo.)  The Wa-Re Sen Dojo was first establish Spanish Harlem on 110 street and Second Avenue in the Franklin Plaza Housing Development.  This where Grand Master Frank Ruiz was the head of security. In the photo with Sensei Carlos Serrano was Frank Rivera.  I remember the first  Dojo Shiai in Franklin Plaza.  The Serrano Brother(Joe and Carlos) did an awesome demonstration of Sanchin Kata, that ended up a self defense sequence.  More photos coming Soon! The Search for the Truth: Homeward Bound Road

I would like to rewelcome Sensei Sam Lewis back to the Nisei Goju System.  Sensei Sam  Lewis and I grew up on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, aka Loisiada & Aphabet City.  We went to the same junior high school, high school and both started in the martial arts in the mid-sixties.  I quess you can say we go back to when the Dead Sea was sick.                                      Our search for the truth has led us on a journey of self discovery. Sensei Lewis trained with then instructor of Nisei Goju, Chaka Zulu, until he decided to leave the system to form his own style. Sensei Lewis  then went to Rico Guy's dojo for many years and found his way back to Nisei Goju International World Headquarters.  Sensei Lewis has always been a friend and always welcomed to our dojo.  He walked into the dojo giving proper respect, a big brotherly hug, and sat down next to me.  I asked him what was going on with this surprise visit.  He made a request to sport the Nisei Goju colors again.  I asked him, why me.  He told me he was tired of running around and wanted to come back home  to Nisei Goju.  I said, Brother Lewis, If Lebron James can go back home to Cleveland, Ohio. So can Sensei Sam  Lewis come back to Nisei Goju. This is his journey.                                                Sometimes our search for truth always leads us back home.  The road returning home had thorns we stepped on, our wounds will heal.  WELCOME HOME SENSEI LEWIS          

GRAND MASTERS OF NISEI GOJU

Grand Master Frank Ruiz (1934-1995) R.I.P. the founder of the Nisei Goju System, taught many martial artists during his lifetime.  In the early seventies, GM Ruiz was in a near fatal car accident that almost took his life. After going through his recovery, a number of his high ranking black belts decided to pursue and develop their own fighting systems. There are also those who decided to continue their version of what the grand master was teaching. GM Ruiz taught in the Northeastern(NY Tri-state area ) and Southeastern(Florida)  coast of the United States.  GM Ruiz's only sensei was GM Peter George Urban(1944-2004) founder of USA Goju Ryu.  In Grand Master Ruiz's tenure a number of grand master have emerged from the Nisei Goju System. I will mentioned these masters that are in the photos below and the systems they founded.

OFFICIAL KARATE APRIL 1972 COVER

With all due respect, I would like to send greetings and salutations to those brothers and sisters who travel east and do the work of the GRAND ARCHITECT OF THE UNIVERSE.

I got the magazine on ebay. It was a late day in May, that Grand Master Frank Ruiz and I shot the cover for the April 1972 Edition of OFFICIAL KARATE MAGAZINE. The photographer was Joe Griffin. His studio was on west 40th Street. I remember that day. It was raining that day and we got to the studio late and drenched from the rain. After having some coffee and something to eat, we got down to the business of the shoot. I was a young Shodan and very excited about doing the cover with my grand master. During the shoot the photographer decided to go with this photo. We used one roll of film, that 32 shots on the roll. Grand Master Ruiz had no facial expressions. Mr. Joe Griffin wanted the grand master to make a face expression for the shot. Joe said "Make a face, Frank". 32 shots were taken and I remember telling Sensei Ruiz "For gods sake, please make a face sensei". After all, getting slammed in the neck 32 times was no fun!! It was, to say the least an exhausting shoot. Proud to do the cover with then Sensei Ruiz, I will cherish that moment in martial arts history. For many years, I was the grand master's uki for many of his demonstrations. When we did our knife sequence, he would always insist that we use a live blade. That made it real, when most demonstrators did not use live blades. I cut the grand master twice during some of these performances. I would later be cut by one of my own students. As they say, the apple doesn't fall from the tree. This was old school training still being used at the NISEI GOJU RYU HOMBU DOJO. It very hard to train a good uki these days. Never the less, I enjoyed every minute we worked together. Rest in peace Grand Master Ruiz, we still work it in the same spirit and dedication. OSU!!!

GM ROLDAN AT THE BUSHOKAI IN TEXAS

I would like send respect to those who travel east and do the work of the Grand Architect of the Universe. On October 29, 2010, I left to the Dallas- Fortworth area of Texas. I was greeted by Shihan Ivan Lewis and taken to the city of Kennedale, home of the Busho Kai Organization. There, I did 4 mini seminars on Nisei Arnis Jitsu. Each session lasted about one and a half hours. I also attented a dojo demonstration and promotion ceremony. The workshops were divided by age and rank. I work with the children of the dojo as well as the adults. A great time was had by all who attended the work shops.
It was nice to see Shihan Lewis and his family of martial artists. It has been over fifteen years since my last visit. The family and Bushokai's growth in Texas was evident on my trip. A great group of black belt, students, and a wonderful dojo. Shihan Lewis's entire family is involved in the dojo in one way or another.
The demonstration and promotion ceremony was a great event with visiting grand masters, parents, students and the like. The students demonstrated syncronized katas, kihon and bunkai(applications). Then the promotion and awarding of the belts. Congratulations to all who were promoted. It was beautiful to see the growth of Shihan Lewis's family and his Bushokai System. Keep it going on, Shihan Lewis!!!!

NISEI GOJU RYU ON WPAT 930 AM RADIO

Friday, November 5, 2010, Hanshi W. Roldan did a radio broadcast on WPAT 930 AM Radio!! He was interview by Sensei Teddy Smith on his radio show. The TEDDY SMITH SHOW ON WPAT 930 AM and wpat930am.com. It was broadcasted live and used a call in format. Teddy Smith is a radio personality who is a 5th degree black belt in Judo(gentle way) and karate black belt. On the program were film director Bryan Felber, GM Wilfredo Roldan, and Dr. Arlen Fleisher M.D. open heart surgeon and vein specialist. Bryan Felber and Roldan have been working on some film projects together and both answer questions about the martial arts filming process and Roldan answered the martial arts questions that were posed by the listening public. DR. Fleisher answered question about the heart and the vascular system(arteries and veins). One lady called inquiring about breaking a cinder slab with her head and another caller asked how he could kill a man. Well, lots of wierd questions were answered. More calls came in after we left the studio and we were asked to make another appearance on the program. I am looking forward to the next broadcast. Photos 1: Roldan and Teddy Smith. Grand Master Isaac Henry Passes

I would like to send my blessing to those who travel east and do the work of the Grand Architect of the Universe.

We of the Nisei Goju Family send our condolences to the family of Grand Master Isaac Henry Jr. I remember watching his group at karate tournaments back in the day. A championship crew, GM Henry troops were all respected by the martial arts community. He produced many champions of the arts. Grand Master Isaac Henry Jr. served his country in the military, was a police chief and founded the BKG martial arts system.

Grand Master Henry was one of the pioneer of the American Martial Arts Movement. Rest in Peace O'Sensei(great teacher) Henry, for you have taught many, the lessons of martial arts and life. You will be remembered by those lives you have touched. OSU!!!

4th NISEI GOJU TOURNAMENT HYDERABAD AP, INDIA

This past May 25, 2010, Sensei Konda of Hyderabad AP, India hosted the 4th Nisei Goju Championship in Hyderabad, India. The tournament was held at the D. P, S. School of the city. We are proud of the work Sensei Konda, in spreading Nisei Goju in his country.
The tournament was well attended with members of the martial arts community. In the top photo we have two little girls after receiving their award. Little girl on the right is Sri Laxmiamshita, who only training for 6 month took 1st place in her kata division. The photo below shows Mahesh receiving his Kata Grand Championship Trophy. HANSHI FRANK RUIZ 1934-1995 15TH ANNIVERSARY

I would like to sent my respect to those who travel east and do the work of the Grand Architect of the Universe.

On this Father's Day I send a special greeting to all fathers who do the right thing by their families.

On this day in 1995 the martial arts world lost Hanshi Frank Ruiz 1934-1995, Founder of the Nisei Goju Ryu System. Here, we celebrate the fifteenth anniversary of his passing. We remember his life and contributions to the martial arts. He raised many children in the Martial Arts and I was one of them. I am very proud of that fact. I ask the martial arts world to have a moment of silence today and remember O'Sensei Frank Ruiz. He was a father to many of us.

I remember taking the above photo for the cover of Official Karate Magazine. It took a whole roll of film(32 photos) to take this photograph of Grand Master Frank Ruiz choking me. I remember the photographer, Joe Griffins telling Hanshi Ruiz , "Frank, your not making a mean enough face". That's when I said "All due respects, would you make a mean face, already". Remember the name, the man, the martial artist and the legend Frank Ruiz. Rest In Peace, O' Sensei Ruiz, you are missed by those of us you touched.

EDWIN J. RODRIGUEZ PROMOTED TO JUNIOR RENSHI

First, I would like to send my respects to those who travel east and do the work of the Grand Architect of the Universe.

CONGRATULATION!!!!!! Sensei Edwin J. Rodriguez on ascention to the rank and title Yo Dan Renshi (4th degree black belt).

Sensei Rodriguez born April 21, 1957 in Brooklyn, New York and raised on the East Villiage aka Lower East Side(Loisada). Affectionately known as Eddie to his friends, at the age of eight, started his martail arts training with Ho Hun Pon Academy of Self Defense in Chinatown,NYC. I recruited him into NISEI GOJU RYU, when I was teaching at the Madison - Hamilton House (circa 1970). I took him to the NISEI GOJU HEADQUARTERS to train with me and Grand Master Ruiz. Sensei Rodriguez also did some training with GM Ronald Morgan Taganashi (Founder: America Te) and GM Rex Lee (Founder: Lee Jitsu Ryu).

Sensei Rodriguez, a retired correction officer for the City of New York, is also a motorcycle enthusiast who is a member of the ENFORCER MOTORCYCLE CLUB. He will soon begin classes the Margate, Florida area.

Renshi Rodriguez, wear the new rank in good health. God keep you the palm of his hand and keep you working for your system, NISEI GOJU RYU and thank you for your support.

1st FEMALE BLACK FROM INDIA / NISEI GOJU ADVANCE CLASS 2/28

Congratulations to ANJURANI on receiving her black belt from her instructor, Sensei Konda from Hyderabad in Central India. Anjurani was born in Wanaparty near Hyderabad Andhra Pradesh, India. She is the 1st female Nisei Goju Black Belt in India. RIGHT ON!!! She will inspire many of the young students to do well. We are proud of the Nisei Goju group in India.

Keep up the good work Anjurani. Empowering the women in the martial arts is an important thing. After all, without mothers(first teachers), there would never be grand masters.

U.O.T.S. PRESERVATION CAMPAIGN, JAN.14,2010

I would like to send my regards to those brothers and sisters who travel east and do the work of the Grand Architect of the Universe.

We at the University of the Streets and the Nisei Goju Martial Arts Systems are having a fund raiser on January 14, 2010 from 5:30 PM until ? for our continual survival in our service to the community.

The fund raiser will feature music performed by various jazz bands, fusion bands and vocalists. We will also have a silent auction of art work done by the member of the art community, as well as objects donated for the purpose raising funds. In addition to these, we will serve food and drinks. You can become a Patron, Sponsor, Friend, or if you desire to purchase individual tickets @ $25.
We here at the University of the Streets and the Nisei Goju Martial Arts are very proud of the work we have done in the community turning some lives around in our efforts to better their lives. We look forward to our continued work for the people of the lower east side, the East Villiage and NYC. St Croix's New Nisei Goju Group

Before I start, I would like to send my best wishes to my brothers and sisters who travel east and do the work of the Grand Architect of the Universe.

After having discarded the BAD, I visited the U.S. Virgin Island of St Croix to, as they say, keep the GOOD. I left N.Y.C. at 8:55 AM and arrived on the Island about 6:00 PM. I was greeted, at the Airport, by second degree black belt, Sempai Maritza Rijos, the leader of New Nisei Goju Group in St. Croix. After settling in the place in which I stayed, we went right away to a public outdoor training area in Vialco Park.

While there for a couple hours, we reviewed the katas (forms) and kihon (Basic skills) not taught by the group's previous instructor. It's good to have a sincere representative, who is loyal to the system. Many masters say, in order to give life meaning you must do something that is greater than the yourself. We are very proud of the work she is doing to preserve the Nisei Goju Tradition set forth by its founder, the honorable Grand Master Frank Ruiz.

There, I taught a number of classes for the students. During these classes, not only did we review katas and the kihon, we went over class structure from warm up to cool down activities.
The class also cover ippon kumite(one step sparring exercises) and free style kumite(fighting). With two-two hour class in the morning and late afternoon on each of those days. The last class, we held on Sunday, lasted for about four hours with the review of the weekends work, as well as, review of some weapons(Bo, Sais, Katana) katas. Hope they enjoyed the feedback. I also got a chance to spar with some of the colored belts of the group, that was fun. I was also afforded the opportunity to watch Sempai Rijos work out that Saturday morning (7 to 10 AM), with the US Virgin Island's Olympic Tae Kwan Do under Coach Eugene Phipps, a competent Martial Artist and genuine person. To be part of any Olympic Team is an honor for the participant who represents their land in the games. Sempai Rijos: YOU GO GIRL!!!

All in all, I had a good trip and got a lot of work done.

May the Grand Architect of the Universe keep the New Nisei Group in the palm of his hand and keep them working, serving their community for Nisei Goju Ryu.

Happy Birthday Grandmaster Frank Ruiz 1934-1995

Salutations to those who travel east and do the work of the Grand Architect of the Universe.

Grand Master Frank Ruiz, Founder of Nisei Goju Ryu, July 2, 1934 - June 20th 1995. He would have been 66 years today.

He was credited for having assembled some of the many karate champions of the era under one battle flag, the Nisei Goju Ryu Organization. Grand Master Ruiz's history in the martial arts is well documented.

I was a brown belt when I first met the grand master. I was taken to the Master Skipper Ingham's mid-town Dojo by Master Owen Watson (my 1st teacher). Grand Master Ruiz looked at me and asked Master Watson, "What's he doing here?". Master Watson said, " for disciplinning!". I thought OH! Sh*t and some other choice words. What the hell did I do? I never found out. As soon as I stepped on the floor, the grand master called me over to do kumite (sparring).

The next thing I knew, my face and head were between his foot and the floor. That was an awesome experience. Thanks for touching our lives and for giving us the memories.

NISEI GOJU'S HALL OF SHAME INDUCTEE OF ST.CROIX

The year: August 1994 The magazine: Inside Kung Fu. I wrote a letter that was published in the Martial Arts Insider magazine.

The letter was titled "Hall of Fame or Shame". Reading the letter will give you a better idea of what I'm speaking of.
After corespondance from St. Croix, I received a phone call from a Joshua Espinal and made plans for him to visit the Nisei Goju Hombu Dojo to train in Nisei Goju system for only a week. I recognized his 2nd degree black belt rank. I had learn much later that he had already accepted a 5th degree black in karate and he was co-founder a martial art style called Kaze Senshi. After I googled the name, I found that the name came out of Manga. That's basically a Japanesse Anime (cartoon). I also found Japanesse lyrics from Kaze No Senshi (Song). What a way to name a martial art system. Awarding a young man such a rank was and still is a disservice to the Martial Arts. As for the so called masters who did the diservice, you know who you are, shame on you.

Last year I was approach by one of the grandmasters I knew in the US Virgin Islands, who told me that Mr. Espinal was wearing a fifth degree black belt and my insigner. The photo above shows Mr. Espinal in the middle wearing a Renshi 4th or 5th Dan rank (red and white belt) that I did not approve of. These kinds of ranks are held by older men and not young boys. That's right, in my humble opinion, he was and is still too young for such a rank.

In his desire to achieve notoriety in the martail arts, he has lied to the entire martial art community about his real affiliation with Nisei Goju. He has lied to the people of St Croix and as well as his own students.

This past year he came to New York realizing his error, he said he would rectify the situation. Another lie, as he never corrected his mistake to the public. It was during his last trip to New York City that I realized that he was an incompetent practitioner of the arts.

This past May, I visited his group in St. Croix and came realized again, that he was not doing the right thing for Nisei Goju and continued, after I left, to do the same. Doing the right thing was never in his plans.

I can honestly say that I made a mistake in recognizing him as a sensei in the art that I hold so dear. This past week I received another call from this impostor, saying "you no longer have a Nisei Goju Group in St Croix, thanks for your help".

I can only wonder what other untruths he has spoken about his life in the military, as well as the martial arts. So, he did not destroy the documents of his fantasy nor his renshi obi (5th Dan red and white belt) as he said he did. The best thing he did for Nisei Goju Ryu was to leave and restart his fantasy. I told him to build a reality and not a fantasy. He couldn't even do that right.

So, Espinal, all I can say is, you have disgraced the martial arts and "MAY THE FARCE BE WITH YOU"

NISEI GOJU RYU ADVANCE CLASS JUNE 28,2009

Respects and best wishes to those who travel east and do the work of the Grand Architect of the Universe.
The next adanced class will held on Sunday, June 28, 2009 at the Hombu Dojo of the Nisei Goju Martial Arts Systems. Open to all martials artists with brown belt and above. Class cover falling skill, throwing tecniques, locks, and the practical application inherent in the goju katas. There will also be a question and answers session.
